What is computer?

Computer can be defined as an electronic device which has the ability to accept data, process the accepted date and give out information that can be stored for future use. (SImply put)
Data are the raw materials we enter in to the computer through the keyboard.
Information are the end product of our input data after the computer has processed them.

What is  a Byte?

Data and information are measured in bytes. This is how storage capacity are measured:

1. Bit: The Tiniest amount of information

2. Byte: eight bits put together - this is about the size of a character e.g. 1,2,3,&, and so on...

3. Kilobyte: 1000 bytes

4. Megabyte: a million byte

5. Gigabyte: a billion byte

You should know that sizes of electronic materials and storage devices are calculated in bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, and gigabytes. 

 

What are some of the Characteristics of the Computer?

The computer is SPEEDY

Computer is DILIGENT

It is CONSISTENT

It is AUTOMATIC

It works with little or no human INTERFERENCE

It does COMPLEX works

It is PROGRAMMABLE

Etc...

 

Classification of Computer

We can classify the computer based on 3 major categories

1. Based on the Type

2. Based on the Purpose

3. Based on the Size

Types of Computer

We have 3 major types of computer namely:

• Analogue Computers

• Digital Computers 

• Hybrid Computers

Analogue computers are machine used in measuring weights which changes with time. e.g. Thermometer used in checking the temperature, measurement scale, etc.

 

Digital Computers are machines that functions with the use of numerals and alphabets. e.g. calculators, laptops, etc.

 

Hybrid Computers are machines that possess the qualities of both the analogue and digital computers. e.g. HYDAC 2400

Purposes of Computer

Special Purpose

General Purpose

Some computers are made for special purposes, e.g. X-ray machines, thermometers, etc while other are built for general purposes like the desktop and laptops which we can use for virtually all purposes, ranging from playing games, browsing, making calls, typing, etc.

• Miniframe Computers

• Microframe Computers

Mainframes are the largest and contain more than five users at the same time, miniframe computers contain two users and microframe contain just one user at a time.
